Veterans' Memorial Dedication

Saturday, October 3, 2015

10 AM - 12 PM

Wilson Farm Park

The Berwyn Veterans will formally dedicate their new addition to the Veterans' Corner in Wilson Farm Park with an event that includes the Conestoga Marching Drum Line, local scout troops, color guards, local fire department vehicles, as well as free hot dogs and sodas afterwards. The event will be held at the large flag pole near the rear pavilion with plenty of parking and no towing of vehicles for this event.

The new addition is a listing of local residents who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States going back to the French and Indian War. The listing was originally put together by students at Conestoga High School.

All are invited to attend. This is another opportunity to thank all our veterans for their service. If a name is missing from the listing, this is a chance to get the information to the Berwyn Veterans for future inclusion at the memorial. Contact...

Inspections and Permit Services

As of late, there has been an onslaught of property maintenance complaints associated with dead and/or dying trees and shrubs. The Township has gone from the normal 2-3 calls a month to at least 2-3 a week. Kind of strange.  But, just like clockwork, the proverbial inquiry of, "Is there a full moon?", arrived right on time.

The Township thought this would be a good topic to clarify most misconceptions about how the Township Property Maintenance Ordinance regulates dead and dying trees along with overgrowth that may cause line-of-sight or occasional blight issues.

One thing to remember is that when it comes to personal property, most discrepancies and/or disagreements on just about any topic are considered "civil" in nature, meaning that all parties involved are required to resolve the issues civilly. If that cannot be done, the next step would be to file the discrepancy or disagreement civilly, with the local court so that a remedy can be obtained based on the sworn facts and without prejudice.

You can read the full ordinance (at the link below) which is intended not so much for the property line disagreement, but more so within the public way that may, as written, put business occupants, pedestrians, and other persons using or exposed to the premises in harm's way (i.e.: utility workers, police, emergency response, etc.).

Ordinance of Tredyffrin Township

Let me close with some useful information. It has always been my understanding that any tree growth, shrub, or the like that may find its way over and/or onto an adjacent property, that property owner becomes the new heir of that portion of that tree, shrub, and/or the like. Full Stop. Meaning, feel free to trim, cut, or remove any portion that happens to find its way onto your side of the line.

Good luck. Be good neighbors. And have an enjoyable autumn. My back hurts just thinking of raking those beautifully turned leaves.

Inspection and Permit Services

Parting is such sweet sorrow when it comes to closing the family's swimming pool at this time of year. It was so nice escaping into your own back yard paradise at the end of one of those days you thought would never end. But equally as nice when you're not having a good chunk of your Saturday mornings tasked with vacuuming, filter maintenance, skimming, testing, chemicals etc., etc., etc…

Normally, as part of the swimming pool's winterization process, the pool water level is lowered to a point where any remaining frozen water will not damage the pool shell, liner, or plumbing associated with the filtering or circulations system.

Which brings me to a major concern when lowering those water levels and where that water may end up, either intended or unintended.

It is extremely important to know what a detrimental effect chlorinated swimming pool waters can have on our streams and associated eco-systems. The most common practice that puts our streams in jeopardy is pool water that is drained onto the driveway, allowing the water flow to make its way to and along the street curb eventually leading into the Township stormwater systems. It is important to realize that these systems lead right to our streams, which could significantly impact our beloved wild life. The Township does provide a structured permit program, allowing the ability to discharge pool waters in this fashion; BUT only with prior notice, permit, and oversight provided by the Township Engineering Department.

So - let's say goodbye to what I thought was a most enjoyable summer as we start unpacking our favorite comfy sweaters and wool blankets.
