Inspections and Permit Services

When it comes to an emergency situation, one would hope that our beloved first responders do not play the odds, use gut instinct, or guess what their next move should be. We hope that they are dedicated and well trained so that if we would ever need them, they would know exactly what to do.

As a Building Inspector, it is usually not time critical to find the correct property on my inspection schedule. Unless, when I am running behind, I hope I do not have to guess which driveway I need to pull into. Or worse, make multiple passes back and forth trying to figure out by the process of elimination where I am supposed to be.

The point here is simple. Far too many times, I am not immediately able find the exact property address I am looking for while navigating our Township roads. As the Township's Fire Official, what is more disturbing is knowing the possibility of a potential time delay, if again, the unthinkable comes to pass.

Please allow the Ordinance below to be a motivator to ensure we are doing not only what is required by law, but consciously playing what could be considered a critical part in the community we live and raise our families in.

§ 83-4 Application for street address number.

The owner or occupant of each tract, lot or parcel of land to which no street address number has been previously assigned shall, upon purchase, acquisition or occupancy thereof, or within seven days of discovery that no such number has been assigned, make application to the Township Manager for assignment of such number, and thereupon, the Township Manager shall assign a correct street address number to the property.

A.  The address numbers shall be Arabic in design, shall have a minimum height of three inches and shall be mounted in a secure fashion to the principal building's front wall or to a porch or other fixed appurtenance in front of the principal building in the general vicinity of the main entryway or main path of travel which leads to the main entrance from a public street, or otherwise separately mounted in an approved manner upon the face or wall or upon a post or mailbox in the front yard of the premises. They shall be sufficiently legible as to contrasting background, arrangement, spacing, size and uniformity of integers so that the numbers may be read with ease during daylight hours by a person possessing normal vision and viewing the numbers from the center line of the facing street. To ensure readability after daylight hours, street address numbers shall be made or coated with material which is light reflective. The numbers shall be so placed that trees, shrubs and other obstructions do not block the line of sight of the numbers from the center of the street to any appreciable degree.

May your holidays be safe and pleasant,

Inspection and Permit Services

Happy Holidays. A time for a feeling of well being, not only at home with family, but out and about. Shopping or just socializing with friends. I'm not sure where I am more stressed, watching the shopping chaos on the news or actually moving amongst this annual "Invasion". I remember when it was the season to be jolly. "Wow!"

In my 15 years as a building official, I cannot help but see most things through safety glasses. I don't have to be looking for anything specific and code violations will jump out and scream from just about anywhere. I must say, however, something could be in violation, but not necessarily be unsafe. Nevertheless, I see them just the same.

Which brings me to another "Wow" factor. I like to write not only to our resident readers, but just as importantly, to our township merchandisers. That's right, everyone from the Big Box operators and shoppers to the quaint little espresso bar owners.

Tis the season where most merchandisers rely on this last chance to bring their sales goal back into the black for the year. And rightfully so. Many incomes rely on it. But the stress I get from this part of the holiday equation is how most stores on our shopping list have a tendency to become way overstocked. As a result, store rooms or warehouses become unpassable, display aisles become too narrow, occupant loads quadruple, and store exits get blocked and unrecognizable. These conditions develop quickly and mostly unintentionally; at home too, with boxes, trees, and other seasonal traditions.

So, I would like to wish everyone the happiest of holidays. But I'd be a little jollier and less stressed if we could all just take a moment to look around and organize the warehouse and keep both aisles and exits extra clear of obstruction. I have to say that a big misconception is that these exits and aisles are just for shoppers. But what's just as important, if not moreso, is to have adequate room for our beloved first responders when they need to get to an emergency and avoid having to waste precious time trying to navigate needlessly around obstacles that shouldn't be there in the first place. And quite possibly in "Violation". Hmmmm…

Happy Holidays,

Michael Pilotti
