MOSQUITO SPRAYING SET FOR TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP

Weather permitting, the Chester County Health Department will apply a mosquito control treatment between 8 pm and 10 pm on the evening of Wednesday, September 1, 2010 in Tredyffrin Township.  The area to be treated will be bordered by Route 76 to the north, Route 202 to the south, Valley Forge Road to the west, and Route 422 to the east.
In the event of a weather delay, the application will be conducted on Friday, September 3, 2010.

The treatment will be administered with truck mounted equipment to spray the target area of the Township.  The equipment dispenses Permanone RTU, a permethrin insecticide product, at a rate of 1.5 ounces per acre.  It is recommended that residents stay indoors and close windows during treatment and for approximately one hour after spraying is complete.

For more information on West Nile Virus, visit the County’s Health Department website or call 610-344-6455.

GUIDELINES FOR WASTE WATER DISCHARGE
(INCLUDING SWIMMING POOLS AND HOT TUBS)

Whether you’re draining your pool for the winter or just performing regular maintenance, thinking carefully about the water discharge can save you money and protect the environment.

Most people shouldn't need to drain their pools at all -- maintaining the pool year-round is ideal, and saves both money and water.

If you must drain your pool, however, first find out where your pool discharges go. The water from your pool contains contaminants that can pollute our watershed if they are discharged into sewers or storm drains. If the discharge pipes are plumbed straight to the street or a waterway, consider replacing them with a flexible discharge hose to drain the water onto your property.

A flexible discharge hose can help save money, too! You paid for the water you put into your pool – you might as well use it! You can move the hose to any part of your landscape that needs a little extra water, or collect the water for use on indoor plants. Just make sure that the discharge area is large enough to soak up the water you release without letting it leave your property.

Have limited yard space? Try making several small discharges over time, allowing the area to dry before continuing. You can also try using the flexible discharge hose like a garden hose, watering one area and then another until the discharge is complete.

Reusing pool water on your lawn eliminates most of the pollution problems, keeping contaminants from our waterways.  It also conserves our water supply, helping prevent our high-quality treated drinking water from winding up on your lawn. Some plants may be sensitive to chlorine or filter backwash; if you’re concerned, consult your landscape professional.

In certain cases, you can discharge pool water into a storm drain system, but there are strict guidelines for dechlorinating the water. It’s never okay to discharge backwash into the waterways! For more information about pools and pollution, read the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Guideline for Wastewater Discharge that all residents must follow or go to the Township’s sewer webpage for more information.
