Inspection and Permit Services My sister and her husband just moved into their first single family home after about 35 years of fairly carefree townhouse living, meaning most, if not all of their landscape needs were handled by companies contracted through their homeowners association. Most importantly, snow removal. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they paid handsomely for that convenience. Now, most people at this stage in their lives are thinking about downsizing. But I guess there is an exception to every rule. So, after the big move and all the house warming parties, they found themselves looking at this huge black thing in the front yard and it hit them like a ton of bricks. "SNOW REMOVAL"! Thankfully, the place came with a tractor or they'd probably be having the grass bailed for the horse farm next door. Nevertheless, my sister called me after her epiphany and I happily guided them to and through the wonderful world of snow removal. From electric shovels and gas powered snow throwers to plows that they could attach to the tractor that they just learned to start. See, there's a lot to this single home ownership thing. I helped them through a few possibilities and urged them to move on them as soon as possible. You just never know when that first snowfall of the season is going to jump out and you can bet that there will be no snow removal equipment purchasable before, during, and after that unexpected snow event. The moral of this story is that if you need to consider a replacement for that old beat up blower, now is the best time to pull the trigger on that purchase. Don't wait. If you plan to hang in there another year or two with the one you have; again, now is the best time to get that much needed tune-up scheduled so your hands aren't freezing trying to get the darn thing started at the worst possible time. And lastly, take a good look at that trusty old snow shovel that has surely seen its share of snow falls. It just may be time to trade in that puppy, too. Remember, the Township's snow removal ordinance allows only 30 hours before snow covered sidewalks are considered in violation. Good luck to all the strong backs out there. Take your time and enjoy the inevitable. Michael V. Pilotti |
