Swimming Pool Winterization Now that another Summer season is behind us, it is time to start thinking about closing the pool. Most if not all pool manufactures, whether in or above ground, require that the water level be reduced to a point below the skimmer and/or return opening back into the pool. Question is, where to discharge all that water? Depending on the pool size, the amount of water to be drained can reach upwards of 4 to 6 thousand gallons. However, if done correctly, these waters can be discharged slowly and evenly across the adjacent lawns at a rate to allow slow percolation back into the soils and not cause damage to any mature lawns. There is an assumption among many property owners with swimming pools that it's permissible to discharge chlorinated pool waters either into the street, road and or the storm sewer system. This could not be further from the truth. This practice could have and has had a detrimental impact on the environmental health of our streams and rivers not to mention that it is extremely unlawful to do so. So, from the Department of Inspections and Permit Services, enjoy the beautiful upcoming Fall season even more knowing that your consideration while closing out the summer, collectively made a major impact toward our environmental health. And if you have any questions regarding your pool winterization, do not hesitate to give us a call. |
