Inspections and Permit Services

Now that the mower is finally back from its annual tune-up, we are pretty much set for a full season of grass cutting and, oh, don't forget trimming along the drive, walkway, and fence line.

Properties look so nice after mowing, but, so many times, while juggling work schedules, kids' summer schedules, and those much needed long weekends away from it all, the grass has a tendency to find itself at the bottom of the list of chores.

That said, isn't it ironic that despite all our efforts, most people only notice our nicely manicured lawns when not cut. And the green stuff keeps growing and we cannot shut it off until Fall. So, if you're planning that week or two vacation or even the long weekend at the shore and there just isn't time for you to see to your own private fairway, try coordinating with a youngster from the neighborhood or one of the lawn care pros zipping through the Township. Knowing that coming home to your neatly manicured palace is worth maintaining the stress level you've successfully lowered while on vacation. Unfortunately if not, given our ordinance below, I'll be bugging you. Otherwise, have a great summer!

§ 77-1General regulations. It shall be unlawful for any owner or person in possession of any lot or premises within this township to permit the same to be covered with tall grasses or weeds.

Inspections & Permit Services

Let's take a moment to build on last month's article about home smoke detectors. A colleague of mine was having a problem with her detectors sounding without any presence of smoke or possible carbon monoxide. But, before she committed to replacement of the devices, per my recommendations and an article she researched online suggested that a simple cleaning or vacuuming from time to time could go a long way to adding longevity to the detectors. When struggling with those stairs during your vacuuming routine, just reach up from time-to-time and hit those cobwebs on and around the detectors. This could go a long way with your wallet, not to mention the peace of mind knowing your equipment is in top shape and ready to perform.

Let me close with what may be useful if you are preparing to sell a home or just would like to know that your home detection system completely complies with current building codes and standards:

R314.3 Location. Smoke alarms shall be installed in the following locations:

  1. In each sleeping room.
  2. Outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms.
  3. On each additional story of the dwelling, including basements and habitable attics but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics. In dwellings or dwelling units with split levels and without an intervening door between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed on the upper level shall suffice for  the adjacent lower level provided that the lower level is less than one full story below the upper level.
