2014/2015 Back to School

Safety Message

We hope that everyone enjoyed a productive and safe summer.  As we enter into another school year, we, at the Tredyffrin Township Police Department, wish all returning students a successful, safe and dynamic school educational experience.

Further, the Police Department wishes to re-emphasize to all students the importance of making "good and safe choices" in everything they do.

The Police Department will continue its proactive approach to school safety by a continued daily presence at the public and private schools within our jurisdiction.

Additionally, we wish to remind all residents that since our schools will soon re-open, to closely adhere to traffic laws especially near school zones, school crossings and certainly at bus stops.

Safe, careful and aware driving will ensure the continued safety of our young residents on their travels to and from our schools.

Please know that the Tredyffrin Township Police Department continues to make school safety a top priority.

Parents are welcomed to contact the police department with any safety concerns at 610-644-1400.

Shire's "Big Give" Seeks Book Donations to Help Chester County Children in Need

Shire and non-profit Cradles to Crayons host seventh-annual regional donation drive in conjunction with Tredyffrin Township Community Day.

How better to show your pride in Tredyffrin Township on its ten year anniversary than by helping its children in need? On Saturday, September 27, Shire's annual "Big Give" donation drive will be taking place in coordination with the Township's ten year anniversary celebration at Wilson Farm Park, 500 Lee Road in Wayne. The "Big Give" seeks to benefit children and families in Tredyffrin Township and beyond with an emphasis on collecting books. The goal for the 7th annual Big Give is to collect 3,000 books, especially those suitable for children 3 and younger or between ages 9 and 12. Other badly needed items include socks and underwear, batteries, baby healthcare products, pants, and winter clothing.

Dryer Safety

As part of annual fire safety practices for homeowners, we often forget about that often unseen pipe coming out of the back of our dryers. To our credit, as taught, we always clean the lint filter in the front after every dryer cycle, right? Unfortunately, however, lint often passes the filter's netting and makes its way to the exterior of the building. Herein lies the potential problem.

The following are a few things to consider that regulate the installation and/or repair of the much neglected "Clothes Dryer Exhaust Ventilation":

  • Seal around all exhaust penetration to the building's exterior.
  • Cleanouts between the appliance and the exterior termination with change in directions.
  • Backdraft protection and prohibited use of screening at the exterior termination point.
  • Appliances installed in closets and or closed quarters should have adequate air supply.
  • Exhaust duct supports and protection from damage.
  • Always follow the manufactures instruction as this will always make or break warranties.

Since we all change the batteries in our smoke detectors annually, this also is the perfect time to evaluate the dryer exhaust in an effort to prevent and/or remove any build-up and/or obstruction that may cause the appliance to overheat, cause higher energy use, damage to the appliance, and the ultimate potential for catastrophic loss.

The Department of Inspection and Permit Services wish all the residents it services and an enjoyable remaining summer.
