Happy Holidays. A time for a feeling of well being, not only at home with family, but out and about. Shopping or just socializing with friends. I'm not sure where I am more stressed, watching the shopping chaos on the news or actually moving amongst this annual "Invasion". I remember when it was the season to be jolly. "Wow!"

In my 15 years as a building official, I cannot help but see most things through safety glasses. I don't have to be looking for anything specific and code violations will jump out and scream from just about anywhere. I must say, however, something could be in violation, but not necessarily be unsafe. Nevertheless, I see them just the same.

Which brings me to another "Wow" factor. I like to write not only to our resident readers, but just as importantly, to our township merchandisers. That's right, everyone from the Big Box operators and shoppers to the quaint little espresso bar owners.

Tis the season where most merchandisers rely on this last chance to bring their sales goal back into the black for the year. And rightfully so. Many incomes rely on it. But the stress I get from this part of the holiday equation is how most stores on our shopping list have a tendency to become way overstocked. As a result, store rooms or warehouses become unpassable, display aisles become too narrow, occupant loads quadruple, and store exits get blocked and unrecognizable. These conditions develop quickly and mostly unintentionally; at home too, with boxes, trees, and other seasonal traditions.

So, I would like to wish everyone the happiest of holidays. But I'd be a little jollier and less stressed if we could all just take a moment to look around and organize the warehouse and keep both aisles and exits extra clear of obstruction. I have to say that a big misconception is that these exits and aisles are just for shoppers. But what's just as important, if not moreso, is to have adequate room for our beloved first responders when they need to get to an emergency and avoid having to waste precious time trying to navigate needlessly around obstacles that shouldn't be there in the first place. And quite possibly in "Violation". Hmmmm…

Happy Holidays,

Michael Pilotti
