Homeowner Safety Tips With Loss of Power

  • 1- Shut off main water supply to dwelling if individual fixture shut offs are absent.
  • 2- Be sure to shut off all exterior wall spigots to prevent from freezing.
  • 3- Be sure not to overload light extension cords with multiple appliances.
  • 4- Keep portable heating generating appliances at a safe distance from curtains and furniture.
  • 5- Re-fill all fuel burning appliances outside of all structures.
  • 6- Be vigilant with animals around portable heating appliances.
  • 7- Keep all fuel containers completely separate from all heating appliances.
  • 8- Candles should be extinguished when unattended.
  • 9- Candles should only used with an appropriate wax and flame containment.

NOTE: When evacuating a dwelling without heat, shut main water supply off and open the nearest faucet to relieve system pressure. Leave faucet open until turning water back on.

NOTE: When evacuating a dwelling without electric, shut the main breaker off so if and when the power is restored to the home, possible electric hazards will not result without proper supervision.
